Tasting - Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio

1) LABEL:  2) ME:

THE WINE: I tried a glass of Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio, made with the Pinot Gris grape, at the Kroger Bar on Main Street. The bottle costs $14 and the wine comes from Toscana, Italy with a vintage year of 2023.

CRITIC REVIEW: A review of the wine can be found on Wine Enthusiast, written by Danielle Callegari (Review) who gave the wine a score of 88.

MY REVIEW: The glass of Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio I had was probably 1 out of 10 glasses of white wine I have ever had. I have always preferred a glass of red wine over white, but I can say my opinion has changed after trying a glass of San Angelo Pinot Grigio. The wine has a good citrus tart followed a hint of sweetness (Wine Folly 149 "styles from dry - sweet"). The legs of the wine were quite faint which attributes to my note on the viscosity of the wine. The wine went "down like water", not in how quickly I drank it, but the feeling in my mouth and the viscosity of the wine when taking sips. Following a swirl and sniff test, I scented crushed green grape with a squirt of lemon/lime (Wine Folly 149 "Lemon Zest"). I find that the smell I experienced differed only in the order of events when compared to my tasting. I tasted tart then sweet and I smelled sweet then tart. After drinking the glass of Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio, I am eager to try more white wines and widen my taste from red and merlot to even greater varieties!

Tasting - Josh Merlot

1) LABEL:    2) ME:

1) THE WINE: I tried a glass of Josh Merlot, made with the Merlot Grape, at the Kroger Bar on Main Street. The bottle of Josh Merlot cost $12 and is from California in the Mendocino region with a vintage year of 2022.

2) CRITIC REVIEW: A review of the wine from an online source can be found on Wine Enthusiast, written by Stacy Briscoe (Review), with a score of 88.

3) REFERENCES of FLAVORS: The wine had a taste of tart cherry with an aftertaste of a smooth chocolate tang. (Wine Folly 131). I also noticed a slight taste of dried fig, adding to the cherry flavor (Wine Folly 132).

4) MY REVIEW: Personally, I found the wine to be quite tasty, and less tart than what the Wine Folly text describes for Merlot wine. The wine went down smoothly, like a glass of chocolate milk, layered with cherry tart. When swirled around in the glass, the wine showed strong legs. When back at "KroBar" I wouldn't be surprised if I were to order Josh Merlot again; however, I am not eager to go back just to get Josh merlot. I did not have the wine with food, but I'm sure Josh and a nice flank steak and broccoli would go well together. I recommend this wine for anyone looking for a cheap chocolate and cherry tasting adventure!

Blog 1: Introduction

First and foremost, my name is Tommy Shipley and I am a senior majoring in Cybersecurity Mgt & Analytics. As for wine, my experience is very limited. Overall, I have probably drank wine at most 50 times in my life. Most of these wine drinking experiences take place at large family dinners (Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, etc.), weddings, and whenever someone offers me a glass for any occasion. From the wine I have drank, I prefer red over white and prefer not to drink it out of a fake "plastic" glass or cup. I'm excited to learn more about wine by taking this course. I would love to learn more about the different types of grapes used, how agriculture can affect the growing process, and the different types of wine glasses!
